At Ripping It Outdoors, we’re all about working smarter in the field, not harder. Whether you're prepping ground for a fall food plot or refreshing a field in spring, the right tools make a big difference. Over the years, we’ve tested, used, and come to rely on a handful of pieces that consistently get the job done. Tools like smooth rollers, cultipackers, a quality mulcher, a no till drill, and the Firminator are all part of our regular rotation—and for good reason.
Laying the Groundwork with
Smooth Rollers
It all starts with your seedbed. If it’s not flat and firm, everything that comes next gets a little tougher. That’s where smooth rollers come in handy. These heavy drums break up clumps and flatten uneven areas, creating the kind of surface that seeds want to germinate in. We use them both before and after seeding to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. It might seem like a simple step, but trust us—it pays off in a more even stand and better long-term results.
Cultivate Success with
Cultipackers
After broadcasting seed or using a drill, we usually follow up with a cultipacker. The weight presses the seeds into the soil, eliminating air pockets and helping retain moisture around the seed. What we like most about cultipackers is how much they boost germination rates without requiring extra inputs. When time, fuel, and effort all matter, having a tool that quietly does its job this well is something we don’t overlook.
Clearing with a Mulcher
When we need to clear out old growth, saplings, or thick brush before planting, a mulcher is our go-to. It’s quick, efficient, and gives us the bonus of leaving behind a natural layer of mulch. That mulch helps reduce erosion and keeps weeds in check while new plants establish themselves. We’ve used a mulcher in everything from overgrown pasture to heavily wooded plots. It doesn’t get all the glory, but it sets the stage for every step that follows.
Minimal Disturbance with a No
Till Drill
If you're serious about building soil health over time, a no till drill is one of the best tools you can add to your arsenal. We rely on ours when we want to preserve organic matter and maintain the soil's biology intact. Instead of turning over everything with a disc, we use a no till drill to precisely place seed at the right depth. It helps retain moisture, reduces compaction, and protects against erosion. That’s especially important in areas where you’re trying to build better soil year after year.
One Tool to Rule Them All:
The Firminator
There’s something to be said for all-in-one tools. The Firminator stands out because it combines disking, seeding, and cultipacking into one pass. We still use standalone equipment for specific jobs, but when we’re short on time or managing multiple plots, the Firminator helps streamline everything. It doesn’t replace our other tools—but it complements them in a way that saves effort and fuel.
At Ripping It Outdoors, we’re always trying to find the right balance between tradition and innovation. These tools—smooth rollers, cultipackers, a mulcher, no till drill, and the Firminator—aren’t just equipment to us. They’re essential parts of how we work the land efficiently and responsibly. We’ve come to trust them through experience, and they help us help others get more from their time outdoors.
